Getting Started

1. How do I enter a User Name?

The first step in joining or creating your own Chat Room is selecting a User Name. Simply enter a name that you would like other users to recognize you as in the "Name" box on the New User Settings page.

2. How do I customize the Color and Style of my User Name?

On the New User Settings page you can select the Color and Style that you like best from the drop down menus.

3. What does the Refresh Rate do?

The Refresh Rate controls the length of time it takes before the contents of the Message Frame is automatically refreshed. For example, if you set your Refresh Rate to 15 seconds, the Message Frame will be updated with any new messages every 15 seconds. If you set your Refresh Rate to "Never", the Message Frame will never automatically be updated.
Note that the Message Frame will always be updated when you post a new message regardless of your Refresh Rate.

4. How can I filter out foul language?

By clicking on the Filter Foul Language box on the New User Settings page, you can choose to have the Chat Machine hide any foul language contained in the body of a message.

Basic Chat Features

1. How do I know if anyone else is in the Chat Room?

When you first enter a Chat Room you are welcomed by a message from the System. This welcome message contains the name of the Chat Room that you have joined as well as the number of active users currently in the Room. If that number is greater than zero then you're not alone.

3. How do I send a Private Message to one specific user?

To send a Private Message to one specific user in the current Chat Room, you must first select which user you would like to send the Private Message to. To do so, click on the drop down menu beside the "To:" box in the bottom frame. This will show you a current listing of all the active users in the current Chat Room. Select the user you would like to send a Private Message to by clicking on his/her name. Then type your message in the message box provided in the frame at the bottom of your screen. When you are finished typing you can click the "Send" button or just hit the enter key. Your screen will refresh and your message will be added to the current Chat Room, however only you and the user that you sent the message to will be able to see it. The message will be marked as a "[Private Message]" signifying that it is only visible to the user who sent it and the user for whom it was intended.
Note that to return to sending Public Messages, you must select "Everyone" from the drop down menu of active users.
